Why Completed-Candle Confirmation Matters for Crypto Signals
Understand completed-candle confirmation, intrabar changes and why a crypto setup can appear valid before the candle closes.
A crypto candle can look decisive before it closes and finish in a completely different position. That distinction matters whenever a signal rule depends on a close above, below or through a level.
Completed-candle confirmation means evaluating the condition only after the observation interval has ended. A 15-minute setup is assessed after the 15-minute candle closes; a four-hour condition waits for the four-hour close.
Why an unfinished candle can mislead
During a candle, the current price changes continuously. A market can trade above a reclaim level, fall back below it and then close with no confirmation. If an interface publishes the setup during the temporary move, the alert may disappear later or remain in history as if the final condition had been met.
This is sometimes described as repainting, but several different behaviours are often grouped under that word. The important question is more precise: did the published record use information that was final at the stated observation time?
What a completed candle proves
A completed candle fixes its open, high, low, close, volume and closing time for that data source. It allows SignalEdge to say that a specific condition was observed using a stable record.
It does not prove that the next candle will continue in the same direction. Confirmation is evidence about what has happened, not certainty about what happens next.
The cost of waiting
Completed-candle rules involve a trade-off. Waiting can reduce false intrabar confirmations, but it also means the recorded price may be farther from the level when the signal becomes eligible.
That is why confirmation and entry should be separate. The confirmation level answers whether the market condition completed. The planned entry answers whether the price relationship still makes sense. If price has already moved too far, the interface should show that the entry was missed instead of pretending the confirmation price was a live fill.
A neutral worked example
Suppose a one-hour signal condition requires a close above $50.
At 10:35, price trades at $50.40. The candle is unfinished, so the condition is not confirmed. At 10:52, price falls to $49.70. At 11:00, the candle closes at $49.90.
An intrabar alert at 10:35 would have described a condition that the completed candle did not support. A completed-candle workflow records no confirmation for that hour.
If the next one-hour candle later closes at $50.20, that is a new completed observation with its own timestamp. Whether the setup still offers a reasonable entry is a separate assessment.
The prices are illustrative only. They are not current advice or a performance claim.
Data-source and timeframe boundaries
Completed candles still depend on the selected venue, timeframe and data quality. Two exchanges can have different highs, lows and closes. A 15-minute close does not substitute for a four-hour requirement. Missing or delayed data should be labelled unavailable instead of reconstructed optimistically.
SignalEdge records the market, venue context, timeframe and completed-candle timestamp so the observation can be interpreted within those boundaries.
Questions to ask any signal provider
Before relying on a market alert, ask:
- Was the condition evaluated on a completed candle or an unfinished one?
- Is the publication timestamp retained?
- Can invalidated and expired records still be reviewed?
- Is the displayed entry a plan, an assumed fill or an evidenced fill?
- Does the provider distinguish historical examples from current setups?
Clear answers are more useful than claims that an indicator “does not repaint” without defining its publication rules.
