Crypto Setup States Explained: Confirmed, Active, Entry Missed and Invalidated
Learn what confirmed, pullback pending, active, price beyond entry, invalidated and expired mean in a crypto signal workflow.
Crypto alerts are often reduced to two words: buy or sell. That removes the part traders usually need most: the setup’s current state.
A market observation can be valid without being actionable at the current price. It may still need confirmation, it may be waiting for a pullback, or price may already have travelled too far from the planned entry. A useful signal workflow separates those conditions instead of presenting every setup as an immediate trade.
The difference between a direction and a state
Direction describes the market bias: long or short. State describes what has happened since the setup was observed.
A long setup is not automatically ready to enter. A short setup is not automatically invalid because price rises temporarily. The confirmation, entry and invalidation levels determine the state.
SignalEdge uses completed-candle observations and explicit levels so the state can be read without guessing.
Awaiting confirmation
The market is near a relevant level, but the required completed-candle condition has not occurred.
For a potential long setup, this may mean price remains below a reclaim level. For a potential short setup, price may be testing a rejection level without closing back below it.
The practical meaning is simple: the confirmation condition is incomplete. Treating it as confirmed would assume evidence that does not yet exist.
Confirmed or pullback pending
The confirmation condition has completed, but the planned entry remains away from the current price.
This state separates setup validity from entry quality. The market may have confirmed a direction while still offering an unattractive price. A pullback-pending label tells the reader what must happen next: price must return toward the planned entry without first crossing the invalidation boundary.
Planned entry in range
The current price is testing the defined entry area.
This does not prove a fill, guarantee an outcome or remove execution risk. Spread, liquidity, slippage and rapid price movement can make a live result different from a recorded signal. The label only describes the relationship between current price and the planned entry.
Price beyond entry: do not chase
Price has moved materially past the planned entry in the expected direction.
The directional idea may still be correct, but the original entry-to-invalidation relationship has changed. Chasing can increase the distance to invalidation while reducing the distance to the first target.
A disciplined trader interface should not quietly move the entry to the current price. It should show that the original entry has been missed and require either a return to the entry area or a fresh setup.
Invalidated
Price has crossed the setup’s defined invalidation condition.
Invalidation is not the same as “the market can never reverse.” It means the specific market thesis no longer meets its recorded rules. Keeping an invalidated setup active would change the rules after seeing the market.
Expired
The setup did not complete within its allowed observation window.
Expiry prevents an old observation from remaining actionable indefinitely. A market can later produce a new setup, but that should be recorded separately with a new timestamp and evidence trail.
A neutral worked example
Assume a completed-candle long setup records:
- confirmation: $100;
- planned entry: $98;
- invalidation: $96; and
- initial target: $104.
At $99.50 before the required close, the setup is awaiting confirmation. After a valid close above $100, with price at $101, it is confirmed and pullback pending. Near $98, it is testing the planned entry. At $103 without a pullback, the planned entry has been missed and should not be treated as the original $98 entry. Below the recorded invalidation condition, the setup is invalidated.
These numbers illustrate state transitions only. They are not a current market setup or performance result.
What setup states cannot tell you
A state label cannot guarantee liquidity, fills, profitability or future price direction. It also cannot replace independent risk assessment. Market data may be delayed or unavailable, and a rapid move can cross multiple levels between observations.
The value of state is narrower and more defensible: it tells you what the recorded evidence currently supports and what condition comes next.
